Where:

Atina Kitchen

Why:

Friends rave about Atina Kitchen so it was only a matter of time before I paid a visit. Before I’d even sat down, I was drawn to the unique interior design. The vintage Italian advertisements and black and white family photos really bring to life a sense of history and homeliness. The cheese grater and colander lampshades (a subtle nod to its italian heritage), and the numerous books arranged around the restaurant make it truly distinctive in comparison to other brunch places.

Menu:

The breakfast/brunch menu is served from 9am-3pm every day (9:30 – 4 on Sundays). The menu, which was interestingly concealed within a 1986 edition of the National Geographic, has all your brunch favourites – from Eggs Royale to Avocado on Toast to Omelettes. It also features more unique dishes, such as the Hangover; scrambled eggs & cheddar in a tortilla wrap with chorizo and house tomato ragu. The menu also boasts a selection of coffees, loose leaf teas and soft drinks.

Pick:

As a coffee enthusiast, I always try the coffee wherever I go, so I chose a classic Flat White. For food, I opted for the Atina Breakfast, consisting of local pork sausages, bacon, tomato, mushrooms, beans, eggs and toast. You can have your eggs scrambled, poached or fried. The food was served on what was probably the largest plate I’ve ever eaten off. I thoroughly enjoyed my brunch and the overall experience was lovely.

The Damage:

The food and drink were slightly pricier than other brunch places but still reasonable considering the quality and size of the portions. The Breakfast was £9.50 and the Flat White was £2.95, bringing my brunch to a total of £12.45. You can get French Toast for as little as £5 or indulge in the Seared hanger steak & eggs for £10.50. There are also a variety of extras, such as hash browns, potato scones and haggis, which you can add for an additional £1.

Getting There:

Atina Kitchen is situated towards the end of Foregate Street, 5 minutes from Chester Railway station, and just steps away from the famous Eastgate Clock.
