It’s Time to Dine @ 9 Elephants

We were of course delighted to be invited to the pre-launch shindig at 9 Elephants on Northgate Street. What happens when you attempt to convert a bridal salon into a Thai restaurant? Truly wonderful things. We should know, we got to eat and drink them.

We were welcomed upon arrival with glasses of fizz, and able to walk around and take in the decadent interior before things got too busy. Bikes are strung up and hang from the ceiling, bright fabrics in every colour and texture adorn the chairs, and bold patterns lines the walls. Then the eating commenced; thai fish cakes, pork dumplings, chicken wantons, delicious fried rice with pineapple and sultanas. It was a generous and eclectic selection, and suffice to say, our plates were clean. We could go on and on about the food on offer, so check out the menu on their website – a real feast for the eyes:

We also took the opportunity to sample the cocktail menu. I liked the Ko Pha-Ngan Colada (you guessed it, a Thai spin on the Pina Colada, featuring mekong rum and full moon party make-up) so much, I drank it twice. Friends tried the Chang Mai Fog Cutter, featuring cassia fog; a real performance piece, that drew people to our table. Gin heavily features on the menu, but there are mocktails too.

Hot off the press, their wonderful coffee (beans from Thailand) will soon be available to take-away, so if you’re not a fan of Thai food (let’s not linger on how strange this is) or you’re just looking for somewhere near the Garden Quarter area of town to get your fix, this is it. I said I’d take a quick sip of a cappuccino in the interest of trying it, and then, even knowing it was way too late for caffeine to do anything other than kill off my ability to sleep, I accidentally sipped away the lot.

Sorry, I’ll shut up now, all you really want to know is when you can go. As of today, their opening hours are: 11:00-15:00/17:00-22:00 Sun-Thu & 11:00-15:00/17:00-22:30 Fri-Sat. More info and reservation options can be found on their website.
