As a beauty product obsessive, and a recent addition to the vegan club, I jumped (quite forcibly took out the other Amble team members) at the chance to review a Pip Box – the award winning (cruelty-free and vegan) beauty subscription box.
Welcome to the October edit of The Pip Box: Five full size products and a few extras thrown in for added delight. Let’s start with the products included in the lovely box first and foremost:
HJ Manicure, Non Toxic Nail Polish in the gorgeous Vamp shade – perfect for the upcoming festive season (although I did fittingly test it for the first time, over the Halloween weekend). An on-point, seasonal colour that literally ‘vamps’ up any look, without the need for a top-coat, or time. Two coats are required, three ideally, but there isn’t much drying time needed in-between each. A top-coat would likely give your nails more longevity sans chips, but isn’t necessary. An even and smooth application, a rich and glossy shade, and (relatively) chip-proof – a must as we approach the prosecco and fairy light time of year.

Figs & Rouge, Clarifiante Purifying Cleansing Facial Wash – an indulgent wakeup call, or the perfect way to end the day; particularly when the weather is cold, wet and miserable. Only a small amount is required to form a lovely, gentle lather – to take off the day and give some much needed TLC to that 9-5 skin. As a former Londoner, I can’t shout out enough about how much of a relief this product is, particularly if you are city based – this anti-blemish product is ethical science at its best.

ITHA, Organic Lip Glow in Happy – my favourite item in this month’s box. It will get me through this winter season – protecting my pout for those mistletoe moments. Now a firm staple in my handbag, I only need to use it once a day to keep on top of those chapped lips; however, the Jojoba, cocoa butter and Citronella means that this naturally derived product (almost all the ingredients are found in essential oils, and they are all organic), is very moreish (moreish to wear, not to eat). I’m also a huge fan of ‘thinking globally, and acting (shopping) locally’, so the fact that it’s made in Britain ticks yet another box.

Guiltless Skin, Organic Face Oil – my second favourite item. As a recent convert to oil based products, my combination (leaning towards the drier end of the spectrum) skin, loved this as a replacement to my usual night cream. My morning routine relies heavily on speed and this beautiful product needs more time than I can grant it to fully sink in, however at night it is an absolute bedtime treat. Only a few drops are required to work its magic – 99% organic and 100% natural, made in England and certified by the Soil Association, this face oil really is guiltless and has a firm place in my night-time beauty routine.

Cougar Beauty, Mineral Eye shadow, perfect for daytime understatement or easily built-up for those upcoming parties. This month’s box also included a complimentary companion – a 2-in-1 eye shadow brush that is beautifully constructed with a coppery finish, featuring two applicators for broad stroke application and/or a more focused tip for precision. Despite having had fairly extensive makeup lessons and watching hundreds of YouTube video tutorials, I have still yet to master the artistry of eye shadow and consequently rely on simple tricks such as eyeliner, and easy to apply colours that don’t require blending or shading. This was just the ticket – an easy day-to-night shade that added some autumnal colouring to my normally neutral palette, and built-up easily for a more dramatic evening look.

Saturated Colour Sheer-Stick in Delicate Apricot was my bonus item this month. Again Jojoba oil was listed prominently on the ingredient list, which makes this sheer stick a nice alternative to the ITAH lip balm also included. It was lovely to apply and wear, and as expected, there is only the slightest of colour – instead the stick provides a subtle dewy finish, and due to the Vitamin E content, intensely nourishes at the same time.
When Amble met with the lovely Sofi Evans, founder of The Pip Box, a few weeks ago, we were kindly gifted a few extra items that had been included in previous boxes, or were ‘bonus items’ from other boxes. These included a PHN Brow & Lash Comb, WELEDA Mini Body Oil and Greenfrog Soap Company Natural Body Wash.
The brow and lash comb is a staple for every makeup bag, this one retails at £7.95, is vegan friendly, sustainable, eco-friendly, handmade and donates 20% of profit to charity. It does what it says on the tin and I can’t fault it. The body oil smells amazing – and I’ve been trying to encourage (force) my better half to try it on his copious amounts of facial hair – so far he’s not having any of it but I’m enjoying using it on the, erm, ‘courser’ areas of my body…! Retailing at £3.99 for the mini size, it’s a refreshing and nourishing treat. Top tip: use it on your pressure points during travel or at times of stress/anxiety (both of which frequent commonly in my day-to-day life – I practice what I preach!).
And, finally the travel size body wash, retailing at £3.95, this smelt great but I was disappointed as it didn’t foam or lather up which meant it didn’t go very far and I needed a lot each time I used it. However, the product is plant based (organic soapberries), using certified organic ingredients that naturally occur within essential oils – the company also produces its products in the UK, so it’s certainly a company I will revisit.
Full disclosure; I’d never heard of The Pip Box until I was introduced to it via Amble’s interview with Sofia, but I am certainly a convert. With Christmas just around the corner I will be signing up for a few boxes and subscriptions as gifts – myself included. Forever.
The presentation of the box is authentic, simple and effective. It doesn’t distract or detract from the products that lie within. The boxes all contain discount codes for future subscribers and discount codes should you wish to repurchase the products. There’s a reason The Pip Box is award winning, and I’m counting down the days until my next box. I cannot get enough! Not only do I look great (well…better), I feel good too – knowing that I’m contributing to the great cause that The Pip Box is fighting for (in addition, they donate 50p from every box sold to the charity Animal Free Research UK) and perhaps the lesser known companies who are out there, that The Pip Box is championing to the masses. They are indeed “a look good, feel good kind of beauty box”!
