Welcome to the Garden Quarter

The Garden Quarter, located North of Chester City Walls, bordered to the North by Liverpool Road and the South by the River Dee, is so named for the market gardens and orchards which were located here in the nineteenth century, before the mid-Victorian housing boom which developed the current street pattern.

The Origin of the area lives on in the street names: Plum Terrace, Orchard Street and most obviously Garden Lane. As home to Chester University, the area has a large population of student residents. However, a recent commentator on Facebook who claimed there is “no more to the area than students and fast food takeaways,” could not be more wrong. Yes, there are Students, and yes there are takeaways, but anyone who cares to visit the Quarter will find a lively neighbourhood with a thriving community, successful independent businesses and evidence of Chester’s recent and more ancient heritage. The magic ingredients making the Garden Quarter a really special place to live are the eclectic and energetic people who reside there.

As fans of all things independent and interesting, Amble is keen to take a regular stroll around the Garden Quarter and report on the goings on here. Watch this space.
